A substitute baby yarn (100% cotton or wool) for Fleisher's Baby Twinkle?
Hi knitting experts,
I have found a beautiful pattern on Vintage collection for knitting a baby layette. The 4 balls of yarn used to finish a sweater and a beanie is 'Fleisher's Baby Twinkle'
I wish to use a yarn which is easily available but similar to this one.
Please let me know if you know a similar fabric type of yarn that has the same gauge.
The guage of Fleisher's Baby Twinkle is :
17 sts = 2 inches 23 rows = 2 inches
Fleisher's yarn hasn't been available for decades. My recollection of the yarn is that it's fingering weight and comes in 1-ounce/28-gram skeins. You should be able to use any laceweight yarn or fingering yarn that will let you get gauge. Today, we'd be looking for a yarn that gets approximately 34 stitches to 4" or 10 cm. If I were planning to actually put the layette on a baby, I'd be looking for an easy-care yarn. Here are several suggestions over the gamut:
"2 Ply Lace Weight" by Jamieson & Smith (handwash and dry flat) $6/25g/250 yds
"Helen's Lace" by Lorna's Laces (handwash and dry flat) $48/113g/1250 yds
"Suri Elegance" by America's Alpaca (handwash and dry flat) $45/100g/875 yds
"Gems Baby Fingering Wt." by Louet North America (machine wash and dry) $8.50/50g/185 yds
"Fine Milk Cotton" by Rowan (machine wash and dry flat) $12.50/50g/164 yds
"Stork" by Dale of Norway (machine wash and dry flat) $4.80/50g/197 yds
"Baby Ull" by Dale of Norway (machine wash and dry flat) $5.90/50g/180 yds
"Dreambaby" by Plymouth (machine wash and dry flat) $3.60/50g/240 yds
"Comfort Baby" by Berroco (machine wash and tumble dry) $3.25/50g/224 yds
Of the above list, I personally would use one of the Dale of Norway yarns or the Dreambaby. I have used those yarns and I like working with them (and probably have enough in my stash to make the layette). Berroco yarns are also good yarns and would be worth the time you are going to put into this layette.
You might be able to find a sock yarn you like. You're looking for Category 1/Fingering/Baby yarns, and they are hard to come by from US manufacturers, because they cater to the 21st century knitter who wants to knit worsted or sport yarns.
