Is it OK to request no gifts for a 9 year old birthday party?
We are planning my son's 9th birthday party at the local rec center pool in November. We rent out the pool as a private party so he can invite as many kids as he wants. He wants to invite his football team and baseball team to the party which means we are looking at about 35-40 kids. I know this is a lot but he spends 3-4 days/week with these kids and the whole group has become pretty close knit.
We did this same type of party last year and it was great other than he received so many gifts. We ended up giving a lot of the toys to a local toy drive at Christmas. This year we would rather he not receive any gifts at the party (he will still get some from us and his grandparents).
Is this OK to request no gifts? If so, any suggestions how to write it on the invite?
Yes, I think it's perfectly acceptable to say something like, "your presence at the party is gift enough" and then leave it at that. Some people will bring gifts anyway in which case you should have him open them afterwards and not at the party (which I am sure you already thought of since family members are bringing gifts).
