How long did it take and what did you make your very first time sewing?
I'm beginning to sew and so far loving it. While I have done it once in the past I was a child then and it was for a class. I am now working on making a dress and this is my first time in over 10 years. I have literally jumped right in starting with a bit more advanced sewing project. I am making a Daisy Kingdom 0701 Simplicity pattern dress. I am guessing it's going to take atleast a week because I can only work on this at night as I am dealing with a one year old and house al day. lol..
So how long did it take you and what did you make your first time learning to sew?

My first project was in Jr. high Home Ec, and it was a "blouse". It had holes for the arms and head, and some lace. It was perfectly square. And we had to wear those to class! The next project was in HS and was a shift with darts and a zipper, the next project was a dress with sleeves, and then a lined wool jumper, then I was on my own. Since these were all school projects, it took weeks, and the jumper probably the whole semester. The next project at home was a sleeveless shift with darts and zippers, and it was so cute, it took me maybe a couple hours a day for a week. It was red and had black swirls on it. The next was cotton slacks and a coordinated jacket.
I too have just recently gone back to sewing, after a very long absence except for repairing things, and it is fun so far! I made an apron as a gift for a friend's new kitchen, and made a lined presentation box out of a cardboard peach peck box. It had lace, and I "sewed" big buttons on the flaps on the ends, reinforced with hidden popsicle sticks, and made a flap with a buttonhole on each side. It had a fabric flower, also a new thing for me on it too. The recipient said she loved it. I did not have a pattern.
I am also refurbishing the Barbie clothes my Mom made for me, and giving them to a friend's Grand daughter. And making new ones, and accessories such as jewelry and hats and bouquets for all. I am almost finished with a fairy princess outfit. It has fabric flowers and is beaded with flowers and leaves. And Barbie has a fairy wand and a beaded headpiece.
I was inspired, and I have material and a pattern for myself, for a jacket and blouse, and have seen in a retro Paris designer picture a jacket decorated with buttons that I adore. Jackets are "in" this year.
Your one year old will adore all the stuffed toys in the pattern books, there is one that is a rabbit, and it has on a fancy dress. And all of the trick or treat costumes. My Mom sewed for a living, and she was good. I had a ballgown and a real mink stole[she lined it with the same red material as the dress], a Martha Washington gown, a clown outfit, a witch outfit, and on and on. I had a tall teen doll, and she was dressed to the nines with a strapless gown with a midnight blue velvet bodice with ivory satin skirt, and a red corduroy chinese lounging outfit, complete with frog closure. And on and on.
Now I embroider, bead material, make jewelry, I can crewel and needlepoint, and I do weird crafts like my friends are getting welcome brooms for Xmas[brooms that have dolls made on them] and a hand made wired ribbon rose for the wrapping paper. I make Xmas ornaments, too.
I found out that if I pick fun projects, I stay with them and finish them. The beige Barbie mother of the bride dress is still sitting there, in pieces, but the pink fairy costume is done except for the wings and a pair of bloomers for it, can't have Barbie showing her who-ha off while she is flying about, can we. And I saw a kiddie fairy costume with matching bloomers in the pattern book.
Stick with it, even if you only have an hour a day, it will get done. I looked up daisy kingdom, and tried to find that pattern, but it was not listed. It is so fun when you get it done, and know you made something original and custom.
I once long ago made a Halloween costume without a pattern. It was just a simple dress with darts, but I did face the neck and arm holes. Even Rivers can be creative.
