Can I use Double Pointed Knitting needles instead of circular ones to make leg warmers?
Pattern calls for US 8 size circular needles; all I have is double sided size 6; could I use these?
It depends on your gauge and the length of your DPMs. If you can match the gauge called for in the pattern with those needles, you're one step ahead. Since most people tend to knit tighter than the gauge square, however, it is likely your stitch count will be too high, especially if you use smaller needles to do it. If the pattern comes in multiple sizes, you might try doing the next size larger, but with your smaller gauge. You can actually calculate out whether that will work by multiplying the gauge by the number of stitches to find the actual circumference of the leg warmer.
Another problem will be the length of your DPNs. If they are 4" or 6" long, forget it. The stitches will keep falling off and driving you nuts. If they are at least 8" long, you might make it. Here's a quick check on that. Multiply the length of one DPN minus 2" by the number of DPNs you have minus one. Example: ( 8" - 2" ) x (4 needles - 1 needle) = 6 x 3 = 18. If the circular is longer than this number, your stitches will tend to be too crowded and fall off, making knitting frustrating. I'm afraid I can't give you a specific number for them because DPNs come in different lengths and some sets come with four needles (3 holding and 1 working) and others come with fie needles (4 holding and 1 working). But the math isn't hard. Just remember you have to also account for the gauge.
