knitting pattern help, casting on sts onto sts?
Im knitting a doll from this book and im totally stuck on this one row here's what it says :
Row 45: k7, put next 12 sts (for 1st arm) on a stitch holder, cast 8 sts onto 1st 7sts, k13, put next 12 sts (for second arm) on a stitch holder, cast on 8 sts to the middle 13 sts, k7.
so the part im stuck on is ...(cast 8 sts onto 1st 7sts & cast on 8 sts to the middle 13 sts) how do i go about doing this row?
OK, I'm going to assume you're right handed for the sake of explanation.
You've knit 7 stitches from your left needle to your right needle and the yarn is on the right needle.
You've moved the next 12 stitches to a stitch holder.
Now go back to the right needle (where the 7 stitches are).
Take it in your left hand and take a spare needle. Start as if you were going to knit that first stitch, but once you've made the loop, instead of completing the stitch (by pulling the old stitch off the left needle and keeping the new stitch on the right needle), take that loop and put it on the left needle. Basically, you're doing the same procedure as a knitted cast-on.
Now you'll have 8 stitches on the left needle. Repeat this 7 more times; you will have created a total of 8 new stitches and have a total of 15 stitches on the left needle.
Now drop the spare needle, move this needle with the 7 knit and 8 created stitches back to your right hand, pick up the "old" left needle with the stitches on it, knit the next 13 in normal fashion, then follow the same procedure of moving stitches to a stitch holder and creating new stitches to take their place.
What you're doing here is creating an underarm; the stitches on the holder will eventually be used to create the doll's arms, and in that process you will be picking up stitches from the body (those 8 stitches under the arm that you've just added). Raglan sweaters do the same thing.
