There are about 5 distribution firms for books in Japan.
Publishing companies deliver published books/magazines to the distribution firms (they have huge automated warehouses).
Book stores are required to place deposit to the firms.
They place an order to the distribution firms via on-line (not to publishing companies) and receive the books within a few days. This is the basic.
But I don't think they have a staff who speaks English.
Large book stores, such as Kinokuniya and Amazon Japan, have their own automated warehouse and delivery networks.
Kinokuniya book stores have several stores in the US. I guess they are purchasing tons of books and shipping them to the US by themselves.
