Question of Simplicity Faire Pattern (Rennies Only Please)?
I have the Simplicity pattern 9966 (It's a fantasy ren faire-ish style; womens' bodice, blouse, underskirt, overskirt, pouch/purse) I wish to make view C for the ren faire next year. I'm really into looking at least a little authentic (even though I'm sort of doing a cosplay because I want it to look sort of like Malon from the legend of zelda 'cause my friend dresses as Link every year) and I'm getting mixed reviews from all the websites I visit. Some complement it and others laugh at it. What do the rennies of Yahoo Answers think?
(P.S. I know that royal purple at faire is a HUGE no-no, but Malon has a purple skirt and I was thinking of making the underskirt a plum color and maybe fade it out a little. Is plum okay at faire? What about yellow for the bodice?)
(P.S. A few days later. Okay, okay, that was stupid talking about authenticity with a simplicity pattern, but I figure I could change some stuff up to make it a little more ren-esque.)
You are worrying about authenticity on a simplicity pattern.
It’s kind of like worrying about your virginity in a whore house
I have NEVER heard the rule about purple at a ren-fest. Most states ren-fests have so many fantastical elements, it just boggles the imagination. Any way, you can claim you are visiting royalty from another land.
Now, if you are in the SCA (society of creative anachronisms) then it’s time to worry. The "purple" rule is in FULL FORCE. I have heard the rules there- along with a billon other costume rules.
You must decide If you are going authentic or not.
Simplicity is NOT authentic.
If your renfest is in California, I can see where you are going. I have heard (no personal experience) that calie- ren-fests have a case of the state wide “period police”.
Please visit this site:
SCA.org
These are historical reenactment guys who take this stuff seriously. You will get costuming references- even a person you can contact in your area who can get some help for you- if authenticity is your goal.
I have been to the Texas renaissance festival, and it’s a freak show on wheels. NO Authenticity.
Only you know where you are going. If it’s a “ren-fest” then your simplicity pattern is just fine. Make it any color you want. Make it will purple pokadots. You will not look half as freakish as the nude chain mail brigade or the guy in the centaur costume.
If you are going to a California ren fest, or a SCA event- then you may want to rethink the simplicity pattern all together.
(I would think the cali-ren fests would ban the people in the platform shoes and fantasy armor but allow your gypsy pattern in- but no experience since I am in Texas.)
If you are going for authenticity, then remember your clothes describe your “characters” place in society.
If you are poor- only dull bland colors- off white, black, brown, dark bland blue every once and a while. NO ornamentation at all, no embroidery. If you are wearing yellow- it can’t be bright-more of a light tan.
If you are rich, the bright colors are ok. Maybe piece of jewelry. NO circlets or crowns (these are a mark in the organizations themselves)
Remember back then- the middle class was just emerging. You were either poor or rich. The “in between” was few and far between.
There were laws that prevented non- nobility (ignoble) from wearing ornamentation so there would be no confusion of your class.
No loose hair If your persona is married (wear a “snood”) a string hair net is good. I find black ones at “Sally’s beauty supply” I don’t’ know if they have them in your area.
Pearls are ok to adorn- but jems are a little bit out there- not too many.
I was once in the SCA, just for a year, and when to my first ren-fest. All “authentic”. I looked at what other people ran around in… and marveled. My second visit I allowed myself to go fantasy a bit (but I could not throw out all the rules that the SCA drilled into me. Funny how you are programmed!!)
Good luck!!!
