Will substituting bamboo for cotton change the gauge?
I am knitting two Mother of the Bride handkerchiefs and fell in love with a bamboo yarn, opting for that instead of the 100% cotton that the directions suggest. I knit up a gauge swatch because I normally never do and these projects are for my Hope Chest and my wedding party scrap book, and I think I found an issue with my lovely yarn. The gauge for the project is 32 stitches and 36 rows = 4" for size 3 needles in Stockinette stitch. My swatch is more like 32 stitches = 5 1/2 inches across. I did only do 16 rows because the swatch is about the size of the finished project! I reduced to size 2 and then size 1 needles, achieving a gauge of 32 stitches = 4 15/16". I'm thinking of reducing my stitches until I make a swatch with the size 3 needles that is only 4" wide. Any advice, and any helpful websites would be very appreciated! Thank you in advance.
It looks like both yarns are of different weight.
If I were you, I'd go for the 16 rows to get the right size. Either that, or go for size 0 (which is less fun usually). The more important part is the crochet edging.
